The great Universal horror classics, Val Lewton's eerie films, the fun of William Castle's crazy scares, Hammer's wonderful movies ... all in mothballs for another year. Oh, a few get trotted out every once in a while the other 11 months, but nothing compares with the unfailing flood of the best horror during October on Turner Classic Movies.
I'm not the only one who mourns the passing of the month of gods and monsters:

DeleteAs a lot of people have said, and will continue to do so, all good things come to an end. But a least we know it's coming back. I just wish the wait wasn't so blasted long. Grumble,grumble, grumble.

DeleteEven the benighted AMC showed - mostly crumby to be sure - but they showed non-stop horror flicks and it was a shock to the system to check their line-up on Thursday morning and see "Crocodile Dundee". It's so sad to wave good-bye to our favourite monsters, but we know we'll be cheating before it's Hallowe'en again.

I'm glad your funny bone was activated, CW! It is a shock to suddenly see movie line-ups of regular stuff -- but you are right, I will cheat with my own copies. It's just more fun when it's on TV right then -- why is that? Maybe because you feel you are sharing it with other weirdos like yourself?

ReplyDeleteTrue -- I think TCM should make November "Turkey Time" month. There aren't many good Thanksgiving movies, so why not just show a month of really terrible films? I'm a genius!

DeleteThe good news is that classic horror films don't go away when October does. Horror films always will scare the living heck out of people no matter when they are seen. The main joy of the genre is that they will dive into our deepest fears and expose our monsters so that we can overcome it.

Matt, I am so with you about horror movies. We can see them at other times, but isn't it more fun when you know others are enjoying them at the same time!
ReplyDeleteI know! Where did October GO???? One minute it was here and the next it was all over and we're one week away from Black Friday. (Not that I ever shop on that particular day but I've been told that some do. Ha!)
ReplyDeleteBut all is not lost, Becky, in between dodging the hurricane, I watched THE THING and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN and ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. So I'm still a member of the club. :)
Black Friday...you would have to kill me and drag my dead body to Walmart to make me go out into the mobs on that day!
DeleteI'm so glad you are a member of the club too! It hasn't stopped me either ... I'm watching the 1963 The Haunting tonight. By myself. In the dark. Only my kitty will be with me, and she will spend the whole movie standing in front of me, looking directly over my shoulder as if something is there! Never fails...
Becky, I feel your "Goodbye, October" pain! But as you and our other friends here others have pointed out, at least October comes back each year! I console myself with comedy-thrillers such as THE GHOST BREAKERS! (What, little old me, shamelessly plug my blog TALES OF THE EASILY DISTRACTED? Good heavens, no, never, not me! :-)) All kidding aside, Becks, thank goodness for DVDs/Blu-Ray and other phenomena allowing us to watch our favorite movies of all genres anytime! Oh, and speaking of holidays, have a very Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
ReplyDeleteJust today I decided to pull out my VHS copy of Ghost Breakers! Now all I have to do is dig through 5 boxes full -- I never have put them in any order since I moved! Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family too, Dorian!
