Just For Fun -- A Re-Post Of One Of My Favorites!

My Faithful Readers know me as a real purist with classic film -- I saw a commercial years ago that had used special effects to have Fred Astaire doing one of his best numbers with a vacuum cleaner replacing the girl.  I almost had to call paramedics to be taken to the hospital!  So this is a surprise to me ... in looking for Gene Kelly numbers on YouTube, I ran across a tribute to Kelly set to 80's singing star Robert Palmer's hit song, "Simply Irresistible."  My first thought was, oh Lord, here we go again.  I've seen several posts on there which replace the music from classic film musical number with stupid rap songs or disco crap.  Makes me sick and shivery every time.

This is completely different.  For one thing, I love Robert Palmer and this great song, but even that wouldn't do it.  The creator of this clip, KYO175,  put an incredible amount of work into it.  The clips of several Kelly dance numbers actually match the rhythm of the song, and it's absolutely thrilling.  To anyone who knows me, they know it has to be really good for me to even like it, much less highlight and share it.  Hope you like it too!

Thank you KYO175 for your creation, which matches its name!

  3. Will watch this soon as the Yankee game is over. (I too love the Palmer song.)I'm listening to the game online at the moment. :)

Not a Yankee fan really (though my daughter is) and I love it when they lose. They're losing today. Ha!

Amy, Gene was something - handsome, talented, and what a smile!
Doc, I just thought Kelly looked fantastic too. You almost forget just how good he was until you see so much put together!

  7. Boy, it's a good thing you gave it a chance. The work of synchronizing the clips and the sound is most impressive.

  8. CW, I'm glad I did too. I only did because I love that particular song -- lucky for me!

  9. Becky, I totally enjoyed this! What a great blend of two of my favorite music-related stars, Gene Kelly and Robert Palmer! The Kelly clips work beautifully with the rhythm of Palmer's "Simply Irresistible." It just goes to show that sometimes music and dancing from different eras CAN work together if you let them. :-) Thanks for providing that great sequence, Becks!

  10. Just goes to show you - Gene could - and can - dance to anything! He's timeless. Very uplifting!

  11. Dorian, I'm so glad you liked it. It IS amazing that the 2 different musical eras, at least with this song, could work so seamlessly.
FlickChick, Gene Kelly was such a gift to those who love music and dance. We are lucky to know him and appreciate him, aren't we?

  12. Oh wow Becky, what an awesome video! As a Gene Kelly fan, it brought a huge smile to my face and made me realize that it has been much too long since I’ve watched one of his movies. I’m not sure how anyone could watch this and not be in awe of his dancing and creative talent. Thanks so much for sharing this!

  13. I felt like you, Ginny. To see Kelly's amazing talent like this, clip after clip of marvelous dancing, makes me want to see all of his movies again. I'm glad you liked this as well as I!

  14. I love this Gene Kelly link so much I posted it on my Facebook page. It really is remarkably good. I think Gene would like it.

Boy did that man have a great ass....uh, butt, uh, backside...uh, derriere... I know, I know, where is my mind? In the gutter, obviously. Ha!

  15. I'm tickled you liked it enough to post on FB, Yvette. Of course, it isn't mine, I didn't create it, but was lucky to find it! And I know exactly what you mean about Gene, Gene the dancing machine! Ice skaters always have butts like that too. And don't feel bad -- Gene himself spent time in the gutter, at least when he sang Singin' In the Rain! LOL!!

  16. I think that Gene Kelly was always well aware of his body and its movements and the way it would look on camera. He was also well aware of his...shall we say, physical attributes.

In AMERICAN IN PARIS (what I consider his most self-conscious performance) he is particularly on display.

The ballet at the end is the only reason to see the film far as I'm concerned. Oh, and the Staicase to Paradise scene. The rest of the movie makes me cringe. Am I wrong?

  17. Yes, Yvette, you are wrong. LOL! Who am I to say what you like? Nobody! Of course, there is the "Our Love is Here to Stay" number; I LOVE the Gershwin Concerto in D dream sequence with Oscar Levant; Gene and the kids with "I Got Rhythm" - priceless; and all the rest! I guess you can tell I like the movie a lot!
